Matt Baker | Maryville University Athletics Hall of Fame 2018

(upbeat music) [Announcer] And it’ll be Matt Baker! Maryville! The first national champion
in Maryville school history. The year I won the national championship I was a senior, a fifth
year senior in college. After transferring from The University of Nebraska
Omaha, you know, to Maryville. It was my second year at Maryville and it was a great year,
right from the get-go. I decided kind of, my
mantra, was enjoy the year. Enjoy the journey and
leave no stone unturned. He did all the right things, and really disciplined on, especially his senior year, just said this is I’m, you know, this is what I’m going to do. I’m gonna do everything
I can to be at my best. He did that in all of his preparation, off season, in season. I kinda got a little analytical. I tracked my sleep every night. I got a sleep app. I weighed myself every morning. I had a calendar that mapped
out how I was feeling, how many hours of sleep I got, and I just said, hey I’ve
got three months left, January, February, March and this is it. So, let’s do everything I can
to be the best that I can. I think that was the big turning point. I stood in front of the team and I said, this is my goal, this is how I’m going to do it, and I think that was a
huge boost of confidence going into the national tournament. I brought those papers with me. I said, nobody’s done this stuff. Nobody’s put this effort into it and this much thought into it. Now it’s just time to go wrestle and see what the results are. He had a great career and more than that I think he was much more than, you know, just the wrestling, even overall, just a leader by example,
and a great example for our wrestling program, Maryville Athletics, or you
know, Maryville University. Matt Baker winning a national championship for wrestling at Maryville University let the division to
world know that Maryville had not only arrived as an institution, but we intended to be a player.
