High School Principal and Students Score Big with Gift from Ellen

There is someone in
my audience today who is such a big
fan of the show that she put her bachelorette
party on hold so she could Skype with my producers. I want to know what
they were talking about. So Jasmia Fowler come on down. [MUSIC PLAYING] [CROWD CHEERING] Hi. Hi! Sit down. Jasmia, how are you? It’s Jasmia? Yes. All right. Hi. Hi. What were y’all talking about
that was so important that you stopped your bachelorette party? Well, first of all, when Ellen
calls, everything stops, OK? Yes, you’re right. Might be skyping at the wedding. OK? I’ll say, “I do,” in a few. That’s boss. OK. So I was called because
they wanted to talk about my amazing school. I’m a high school principal
at Ánimo College Prep, where I’m just so proud
of my amazing students. It is an amazing school. I’m going to read some things
about your amazing school. You’re a Title I high school. You’re located in a very
dangerous neighborhood in Watts. You have amazing students who go
through unimaginable obstacles, and they’re all
resilient students. You and your staff pay out of
your pocket for your students daily. Your school is a beacon
of hope in your community. Is that all correct? All of it. All right. And then you have an
amazing athletics program. Tell us about that. Yes, so our athletics
program basically provides a safe haven for
a lot of our students. And we want to make
sure that we’re developing
well-rounded students, so they truly believe in the
things that they are doing. And they are such hardworking
and passionate students. And they’re champions. We may not have the budget,
but they are working hard and we’re so proud of them. And where are they– they’re
all at school, obviously? Yes. They better be. Well, not all of them. Some of them are not there. Yeah. [MUSIC PLAYING] [CROWD CHEERING] Hi! Hey. Oh, my God! Hey! Oh, my God! Hi! Hi! Hi! Oh, my goodness! Hi! Oh, my God! Now, we’re back over here. Surprise! Oh, my God. All right. Somebody had something
really special to say to you, that they wanted
to say thank you. Which one of you? Me. Come over here with me, Jasmia. OK. Well, Miss Fowler, thank you. Thank you, Miss
Ellen for having us here, on this
show– and my peers and my beautiful principal. Miss Fowler, we love you. Thank you for being there
for us, being so supportive. We love you so much. We love Miss Fowler. Clearly this obviously
helps in many ways. But why does this athletics
program help you so much? This athletic program help
us because it keeps us, like, on the right track. Because where I’m
from, there’s not a lot of resources in my environment. So this athletic program
really has an impact on the students and stuff. You’re doing some good
stuff, aren’t you? I’m trying. Yes you are. Yeah. We love you, Miss Fowler. Well, you’re more than trying. So there’s no sports
funding, and the staff pays out of their own pocket. And we want to change that. So on Amazon, there’s a thing
called active lifestyle gift guide. So we reached out
to them, and they want to give your students– they want to keep them
healthy and happy. And they are going to donate
tons of sports equipment and a check for $50,000. [ALL CHEERING] We’ll be right back.
